Icopal Ltd, based in Trafford Park, Manchester, has just won one of the most prestigious award s in the construction industry at the Quality in Construction Awards held in London for their fire protective roofing system, FireSmart™.

Icopal fought off stiff competition from a number of leading UK building material manufacturers to win the coveted award for Research and Development. FireSmart™ is a flat roofing system with a fire protective layer that shields the roof from both the spread of flame and fire penetration. FireSmart™ is applied using unique flame free technology.

Managing Director of Icopal UK Dr. Roy Jenkins enthused, “The judges were particularly impressed by the collaboration of expertise on FireSmart from 4 different countries within our Group in the UK, Denmark, Germany and France which emphasises Icopal’s ability to bring innovative products to market quickly due to the worldwide R&D facilities.”

“This is the first time that Icopal in the UK has achieved such recognition which helps strengthen our position as innovative market leaders. FireSmart is also making positive contributions within the industry and now accounts for over 30% of all Icopal specifications in the UK.

“There is a serious insurance crisis within the roofing industry with Employers Liability premiums for contractors rising by as much as 161%. FireSmart with it’s flame free application process is helping to reduce these premiums particularly as it is now recognised by insurance brokers to have a much safer application process than the traditional torch on products,” he adds.
